College Essay Workshops
Interactive workshops for schools, summer programs, and student organizations
Real College Essays offers practical workshops that help students understand what college essays are actually asking them to do — and how to avoid the formulas, clichés, and résumé-style writing that make essays generic.
What students learn
Students learn:
the difference between the Common App essay, supplemental essays, and UC PIQs;
how to choose experiences worth writing about;
why impressive accomplishments do not automatically make strong essay topics;
how to reflect on what they noticed, learned, questioned, or still do not fully understand;
how to explain research, activities, and interests clearly to a non-specialist reader;
how to begin without relying on sample essays or templates.
Who the workshops are for
Workshops are designed for:
high schools and college counseling offices;
summer academic and research programs;
STEM and humanities enrichment programs;
internship and mentorship programs;
educational nonprofits and student organizations.
Formats
Sessions can be adapted to fit your program:
45–60 minute talk;
90-minute interactive workshop;
two-hour workshop with exercises and Q&A;
virtual or in person.
