The College Essay Topic Lab
A live, interactive workshop for rising seniors
Finding a college essay topic is harder than writing the essay itself.
Many students begin by searching for an impressive accomplishment, a dramatic story, or an unusual opening that will catch an admissions officer’s attention. Others read “essays that worked” and try to reproduce what made those essays successful.
Both approaches tend to produce the same result: essays that sound polished but generic.
The College Essay Topic Lab helps students take a different approach. Instead of trying to guess what colleges want, students examine their own experiences more carefully. They learn how to identify the details, questions, contradictions, and moments of change that could become the basis of an honest and memorable personal essay.
What students will do
During this live, interactive session, students will:
learn what makes an experience worth exploring in a college essay;
distinguish a promising personal topic from a résumé-style accomplishment;
reflect on experiences they may initially have dismissed as ordinary;
generate several possible directions for their personal statement;
talk through their ideas with an experienced college essay coach;
leave with a clearer understanding of what their essay could reveal about them.
The goal is not to force every student into a predetermined formula or guarantee a finished topic by the end of the session. It is to help students identify the material that deserves further exploration—and understand how to develop it.
You do not need an extraordinary story
Students often assume that their lives are not interesting enough for a strong college essay. They think they need to write about a major achievement, a serious hardship, or an experience unlike anyone else’s.
They do not.
A compelling essay can emerge from an experience that initially seems small or ordinary. What matters is not how impressive the event sounds, but what the student noticed, questioned, misunderstood, or came to see differently.
That kind of reflection cannot be borrowed from a sample essay. It has to come from the student.
Why begin early?
Choosing a topic takes time. When students wait until deadlines are approaching, they often settle for the first workable idea and begin drafting before they understand what they actually want to say.
Starting early creates room to explore, abandon weak ideas, and recognize stronger ones. Students who attend the Topic Lab will be better prepared to begin drafting when application season intensifies.
Who should attend?
The College Essay Topic Lab is designed for rising seniors who:
have not yet chosen a Common Application essay topic;
have several ideas but do not know which one to pursue;
worry that they have nothing interesting to write about;
are considering writing about research, extracurricular activities, family experiences, or personal challenges;
want guidance without being given a formula or told what colleges supposedly want.
No draft is required.

FAQs
Do I need to have a topic before the workshop?
No. The workshop is designed for students who are starting from scratch as well as those who already have a few possible ideas.
Will I leave with a finished essay topic?
The goal is for every student to leave with promising directions and a clearer sense of what is worth exploring. Some students may identify a strong topic during the session; others may need additional reflection afterward.
Do I need to bring a draft?
No. This is a topic-development workshop, not an essay-editing session. Students do not need to have written anything in advance.
Is this only for the Common Application essay?
The workshop focuses primarily on the main personal essay, including the Common Application personal statement. The approach can also help students generate material for other personal and supplemental essays.
How interactive is the workshop?
Students will complete guided exercises, reflect independently, and have opportunities to discuss possible topics. Participation is encouraged, but students will not be required to share anything they would prefer to keep private.
Is this a substitute for one-on-one essay coaching?
The Topic Lab is a focused introduction to choosing and developing a topic. Students who want more individualized help with brainstorming, drafting, or revising may choose to continue with one-on-one coaching afterward.
